Breeders Cup Betting

The Sport of Kings is often discussed just a few times per year in mainstream sports betting, but the Breeders' Cup is the only time that horses not running in the Triple Crown races get any real notoriety whatsoever. These races aren’t as storied as the three Triple Crown races, only dating back to 1984, but they are known as the "world championships" of horse racing.

The Breeders' Cup is held at a different track every year, generally in the United States. The 2020 Breeders’ Cup will take place at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, and it will be held on November 6 and 7. Don’t miss any of the races on Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7. NBCSN will have all the coverage of the races on Friday and most of the races on Saturday, but the Breeders' Cup Classic will be shown live on NBC.

The Breeders' Cup continues to grow and add races to its repertoire on an annual basis. This event was once just four races, but it has grown to include as many as 14 races over two full days of racing in any given year. The 2020 Breeders’ Cup will feature 14 races, five of which are held on Friday, and the remaining nine of which will encompass the best day of racing of the year on Saturday.

Most Breeders’ Cup Wins by Jockey

Mike Smith 26
John R. Velazquez 16
Jerry Bailey 15
Frankie Dettori 14
Garrett K. Gomez 13

Unlike other horse racing records that are largely dominated by the old guard, the Breeders’ Cup records are all held by relative newcomers since these events are still somewhat new. Mike Smith has been the king of the Breeders’ Cup for the jockeys, winning an absurd 26 titles during his distinguished career. John Velazquez is the second-most successful jockey in the event’s history, but he is well off Smith’s pace.

Most Breeders’ Cup Wins by Trainer

D. Wayne Lukas 20
Bob Baffert and Chad Brown 15
Aidan O’Brien 12
William Mott and Todd Pletcher 10
Richard Mandella and Shug McGaughey 9

D. Wayne Lukas has been one of the most successful horse racing trainers of the modern era. Lukas has claimed first place five more times than rival Bob Baffert, and it’s unlikely that Baffert will catch Lukas in the near future. Baffert has been the trainer of two Triple Crown winners in the last five years though, and he is looking to surpass Lukas in this category too.

Baffert is 67 years old, but he is still going strong. He can boast that he produced the two most recent Triple Crown winners in American Pharoah and Justify, and that has led to his star rising once more. He will have a bevy of talented horses running under his brand in 2020, and it will be tough for a Baffert horse not to find at least one big win in 2020.
